Our Environmental Initiatives

  • Ever wonder what happens to PPE after use — the gloves, masks and other medical staff protective gear in our industry? Well, they typically go to landfill.

    In 2023 we elected to pay for a recycling service to pick up and recover our PPE, diverting hundreds of pounds of PPE from landfill each year.

  • A large part of the conventional dental practice’s waste is in single use, non-recyclable materials such as procedure bibs and surgical gowns. These normally head straight to landfill.

    At McDonough Dental, we’ve manufactured our own re-usable bibs and gowns — gear which we launder on premise in our efficient, safe laundry machines.

  • Commercial buildings like ours have a lot of free roof space. In 2023 we installed a solar collection system at our Hamilton location to reduce our demand on the power grid.

  • In a perfect world, we would be a carbon neutral, even carbon negative business. With that goal in mind, our first step has been to estimate our carbon footprint and offset this with purchasing carbon credits.

    Our philosophy is to purchase 2x the estimate since we believe carbon footprint calculation is always conservative.

  • There’s no easy answer or single solution to the problem of waste and sustainability. We all have to do our part. Consequently our team participates by reducing waste — being conscious of demand and avoiding the creation.

    They also roll up their sleeves and sort waste consciously to ensure what can be recycled, is, and what cannot is identified, dealt with and considered for how to avoid it in the future.
